There + be = existir/haver.

There is = existe/há (singular)

There are = existem/há (plural)

There is a book on the table. (Existe um livro na mesa).

There are two books on the table. (Existem dois livros na mesa).

“There” + “is” podem se juntar por contração formando “there’s”.

“There” + “are” não podem se juntar por contração.

“Yes, there is.” ou “No, there is not.” ou “No, there’s not.” ou “No, there isn’t.”

“Yes, there are.” ou “No, there are not.” ou “No there aren’t.”

Information questions:

How many books are there on the table? (Quantos livros existem na mesa?)

There is one  book on the table. (“one” e não “a” pois o foco é a quantidade)

There are two books on the table.

How much coffee is there in the cup? (Quanto café existe na xícara?)

There isn’t much coffee in the cup. (Não há muito café na xícara)

Observação:

How many = quantos, quantas = é usado com substantivos considerados contáveis.

How much = quanto, quanta = é usado com substantivos considerados incontáveis (o café é um líquido. Líquidos não são considerados contáveis. O número de xícaras, por exemplo, seria contável, mas o café, por si só, seria incontável).

Preposições de lugar:

“on the table” = na mesa = sobre mesa.

“in the cup” = na xícara = dentro da xícara.

“at school” = na escola = na região da escola, não necessariamente dentro dela.

O passado de “there is” é “there was”.

O passado de “there are” é “there were”.
